AWS and Meta team up on AI developer initiative
Meta is teaming up with Amazon Web Services, on an initiative designed to get third-party developers to build new applications based on their technology. The program will provide six months of technical support from both companies' engineers and $200,000 in AWS cloud computing credits each to 30 US startups looking to build AI tools on Meta's Llama AI model. The partnership is set to be unveiled at AWS Summit in New York City on Wednesday. For Meta, the project could be a boost at a time when CEO Mark Zuckerberg is pouring enormous resources into his ambition to become a top player in the AI space. The company last month announced the creation of a new AI super intelligence team, after recruiting leading researchers away from competitors with massive pay packages. Meta also invested $14.3 billion into AI startup Scale, which included the hiring of its founder and CEO, Alexandr Wang, and several other top employees. And Amazon's investment, worth more than $6 million in total, could pay off if the startups continue using AWS's service to access the AI system after the six months. While Amazon has its own large language models, AWS's AI strategy has been to help companies access any model — or multiple — along with the intense computing power needed to run them. Early-stage startups can apply to the program and will be selected later this summer based on the 'potential impact of the proposed solutions and the technical ability' of their teams, AWS and Meta said in a statement. 'We have a long-standing relationship and partnership with Meta, and what we're aiming to do here with the Llama collaboration is really empower founders to build transformative AI using Llama models', AWS Vice President and Global Head of Startups and Venture Capital Jon Jones told CNN exclusively ahead of the announcement. He added that AWS customers are already using Llama to, for example, create AI customer relationship management tools for auto dealerships or financial technology tools. Thales takes a key role in industrial drone project
Thales is planning to take part in Finnish drone project to deploy unmanned aerial vehicles across a variety of industrial sectors. The French multinational is set to provide the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) with an unmanned traffic management system (UTM) to handle flight authorisation, geographic information and network identification, and traffic information services. Thales explained its UTM is the first step VTT is taking in Drolo 2, a project to develop and deploy automated drone systems. Work is initially focused on U-Space Finland, a set of regulatory frameworks covering unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) which forms part of wider European initiatives to enable drone operations. Thales stated the frameworks could pave the way for drones to be used in fields spanning 'logistics, agriculture, forestry, airport and construction operations'. Another element of the work involves creating a business environment for the UAV industry, with an overarching goal of putting Finland in the vanguard of drone launches and testing in compliance with European regulations. A testing site is located near the city of Oulu, which Thales explained is an ideal proving ground due to having a 'medium-sized international airport, seaport, inhabited island', a mid-sized city centre and a 5G development centre. Is it time for a new Apple CEO?
Analysts at LightShed Partners have called for a regime change at Apple in the wake of the company's AI struggles and the failure of several projects. In a note to clients, LightShed analysts Walter Piecyk and Joe Galone wrote: 'Apple now needs a product-focused CEO, not one centered on logistics.' Current Apple CEO Time Cook spent 12 years in IBM's personal computer business and served as its director of North American fulfilment. He replaced Steve Jobs as Apple CEO in 2011. 'AI will reshape industries across the global economy, and Apple risks becoming one of its casualties,' according to Piecyk and Galone. 'Calling last year's WWDC simply a case of over-promising and under-delivering would be kind. Apple was nowhere with AI then, and little has changed since.' The note was issued the same day Apple announced chief operating officer Jeff Williams is retiring later this year, with SVP operations Sabih Khan taking over as COO and Cook assuming direct oversight of the company's design team. 'Wall Street's read on the departure of Apple's COO is that it will cause little disruption,' the analysts stated. 'But isn't disruption exactly what Apple needs right now?' They noted the tech giant could see diminished search payments from Google as it faces antitrust scrutiny while Apple's App Store is also under pressure from regulatory entities. Piecyk and Galone credited Cook as 'the right CEO at the time of his appointment' and stated he 'unquestionably has done a great job.' They noted the company has sold over $2 trillion worth of iPhones with Cook at the helm. 'Missing on AI could fundamentally alter the company's long-term trajectory and ability to grow at all,' the analysts explained. 'This is a pivotal moment for Apple, it's time for more disruptive change, not less.' Source: Mobile World Live Image Credit: Apple
